Young Manchester City star ends his career and enrolls at Oxford: “I needed something more, mainly on an intellectual level”
Han Willhoft-King, frustrated by the lack of stimulation he gets from football, decided to end his career and study law at Oxford University.

In today’s world, it seems almost unthinkable for someone blessed with elite soccer talent to turn down a life of fame, wealth, and success. Yet 19‑year‑old midfielder Han Willhoft‑King has done just that—leaving behind Manchester City’s academy system to pursue a very different dream.
Trading cleats for casebooks
Willhoft‑King confirmed to The Guardian that he will enroll in a law degree program at Oxford University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Explaining his decision, he said: “I always felt unstimulated by soccer. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, but I felt I could do more.”
Born in London to a father of Indian and English heritage and a mother with Indonesian, Chinese, and Taiwanese roots, Willhoft‑King began his youth career at Tottenham Hotspur before being recruited by Manchester City’s renowned academy. He rose through the ranks to the club’s U‑21 squad and was seen as a potential future debutant under Pep Guardiola—a path he has now chosen to abandon.

“I needed something more”
His year at City’s academy was marked by recurring injuries. While he insists those weren’t the main reason for his decision, they did play a role. “They were an important factor, but that’s the easy answer. I felt I needed something more, especially intellectually. I know that sounds pretentious,” he admitted when asked about his preference for law.
A shocking choice in the soccer world
The news has stunned many fans, who see a spot in City’s youth system as the ultimate dream—one that promises financial security and a clear path to professional success. Willhoft‑King understands the surprise: “I don’t know many people who quit after reaching Manchester City’s U‑21s. Everyone expects you to become a professional, but I stopped there,” he said, now officially a student at Oxford.
