Former Club América forward Federico Viñas is set to take on Mexico this weekend in an international friendly. The Uruguayan striker, who now plays for Spain’s Real Oviedo, reflected on his time in Liga MX and the lasting impression the country made on him.

Viñas spoke warmly about his five years in Mexico, describing them as a defining chapter of his career. He credited the league’s growing level of competition and the arrival of top international talent for helping elevate Mexican soccer’s global profile.

“World-class” players in Liga MX

“They were five very special years in a beautiful country that I’m very fond of,” Viñas said. “Liga MX is a very competitive league. These days, you see world-class players coming in from Europe who’ve been with major clubs, and that makes Mexican soccer even tougher and more attractive. People who don’t watch it much think it’s not high level, but it’s actually the opposite - it’s incredibly competitive and entertaining.”

The passion and pressure of Mexican fans

Viñas, who also spent time with Club León, noted that Mexican fans are among the most passionate, and most demanding, he’s ever encountered.

Mexican fans expect a lot, both from their clubs and the national team,” he explained. “When things aren’t going well, they let you know, but their support is always there. They’re true soccer fans. Even when results don’t come, they still show up and back their team.

Life far from home

At 27, Viñas admits that living abroad has its challenges. Now based in Spain, he said he still misses his roots in Uruguay.

“You always miss your family and friends back home,” he said. “It’s hard to be far away, but this is the life we choose as players. If you have a dream, you have to make sacrifices to achieve it. That means being away from the people closest to you. You always miss your country because it’s your little corner of the world.”
