Update:

Club América and Monterrey square off in the quarterfinals of the Apertura 2025 playoffs this week, marking the eighth time these two powerhouses have been drawn together in Liga MX’s postseason since the introduction of short tournaments.

Who has won more playoff series?

Historically, it’s been a tightly contested postseason rivalry, with Monterrey holding a slight edge: Rayados have four series wins to América’s three. Most of those matchups have come in the semifinals, and they’ve even battled twice for the championship.

The only other time they met in the quarterfinals was during the Apertura 2009, when Monterrey advanced with a 2-1 aggregate score - and went on to lift the trophy that season.

Their most recent postseason duels were in finals, splitting the honors. Monterrey claimed the Apertura 2019 crown after a dramatic penalty shootout, while América captured the Apertura 2024 title less than a year ago, edging the northern side 3-2 to complete a historic three-peat.

For this edition, André Jardine’s América holds the tiebreak advantage in case of an aggregate draw, thanks to finishing higher in the regular-season table. América closed in fourth place, Monterrey in fifth.
