This South American star has Liga MX clubs lining up to secure his services
Three Mexican teams are reportedly vying to sign a River Plate striker who is expected to leave the Argentinian giants soon.

Miguel Ángel Borja appears to be heading towards the end of his time with River Plate. According to journalist Sebastián Srur on Radio Continental, the Colombian striker is expected to leave the club in the near future.
In recent weeks, Borja’s name has surfaced among players likely to depart after the end of the Argentinian league season in December, as he hasn’t fully won over River head coach Marcelo Gallardo. If the 32-year-old does leave Los Millonarios, he could do so on a free transfer starting next year, as his contract is up at the end of 2025.
While his future will also depend on his form and whether River and Gallardo want to keep him, Borja’s production has dipped significantly - he went from scoring 31 goals in 2024 to just eight so far in 2025. He recently acquired Argentine citizenship, a key development that frees up a foreign player slot and could, in theory, make a contract renewal easier. However, there’s no indication from River’s camp that they’re planning to extend his stay.
Which clubs are chasing Borja?
Still, Borja wouldn’t be leaving without suitors. Mexican giants Tigres, Cruz Azul, and Club América have reportedly initiated contact in hopes of landing the veteran forward for next season. According to Argentine media, the race to sign Borja could turn into a three-way battle among Liga MX’s top clubs. If any of them decide to move forward, they won’t need to negotiate with River Plate. Instead, they’ll deal directly with Borja to settle contract terms and reach a financial agreement.

How much would Borja cost?
Per Transfermarkt, Borja’s current market value stands at €2.8 million ($3.3 million) - a figure well within reach for Liga MX teams looking to bolster their attack with a seasoned international striker.
Borja has compiled an impressive résumé since joining River in 2022: 157 appearances, 62 goals, 10 assists, and over 8,500 minutes played, including 84 starts.
Prior to his stint in Argentina, he featured for Palmeiras (112 games, 36 goals), Junior de Barranquilla (86 games, 51 goals), and Atlético Nacional (27 games, 17 goals). He’s also earned 30 caps for the Colombian national team, scoring nine goals and adding two assists.
With his pedigree, experience, and proven scoring touch, Borja is shaping up to be one of the most sought-after names in the upcoming transfer window. While River weighs its options, Borja may already be preparing to close one chapter and begin another in Mexican soccer - if the right offer comes along.
