Ciudad de México Update:

Sergio Canales was the player who paved the way for other Spaniards like Sergio Ramos, Óliver Torres, and even Domenec Torrent to join Rayados. The Spaniard’s time in Mexico has had some downs but also plenty of high points, but with his contract expiring in June of next year, there’s already talk of his possible departure and return to the league in his home country.

The Spanish media outlet Estadio Deportivo revealed Canales’ desire to return, specifically to Racing Santander, the club where he came through the youth ranks. Some time ago, the team’s president, Manolo Higuera, said on Cadena SER: “The numbers always work out for us with Sergio Canales. I’ve had a personal relationship with him for a long time and we’re in contact.”

“We’ve exchanged messages, we’ve chatted, and all I can do is pass on what he’s always told me: that his dream is to play for Racing again and that being in the Segunda or top flight isn’t a problem (Racing currently top the second tier LaLiga Hypermotion ranking). Since his dream is also mine, I’m sure that Sergio Canales will be wearing the Racing shirt again in the near future.”

Sergio Canales himself confirmed last year that he would like to return to play in Spain, mentioning Real Betis and Racing Santander. “Right now, I see myself here, because of the respect and affection shown to me by both the fans and Monterrey, but I would like to return to Spain to play when the time comes. Betis? I’m not closing that door, and neither am I closing the door on Racing. They are the two teams I identify with most,” the Cantabrian stated in an interview with the Spanish edition of this newspaper.
