Pumas let this player leave - and he’s scored more goals than any of Los Universitarios’ forwards

Pumas are facing a tough stretch on the attacking front. The Liga MX team has struggled to find consistency in front of goal, and scoring chances are becoming increasingly scarce just as the tournament enters its decisive phase. Between injuries, lack of rhythm, failed signings, and missed opportunities, Los Universitarios are watching valuable points slip away due to their lack of attacking efficiency.

Guillermo Martínez’s injury - after scoring just four goals - combined with the gradual return of José Juan Macías (also with four goals) has left head coach Efraín Juárez with limited firepower in the final third. Both strikers were expected to be the offensive cornerstones of the project, but their performances have yet to convince, and the bench offers few viable alternatives.

Amid this scenario, one name is starting to gain traction: Ali Ávila. The Monterrey-born striker, who had a quiet stint with Pumas over two tournaments, has found the perfect stage to reignite his career in Querétaro. With the Gallos Blancos, Ávila has netted five goals - one more than Pumas’ current forwards - and has become a key figure in Querétaro’s attack.

Ávila’s strong form stands out not just in contrast to Pumas. He’s currently the second-best U-23 striker in the league, trailing only Armando González, who has scored 11 goals for Chivas. Ávila’s growth and confidence in front of goal highlight the struggles of his former team.

Back at La Cantera, his resurgence hasn’t gone unnoticed. Though Ávila left quietly and without many chances, his current form raises a tough question: Did Pumas make a mistake letting him go just when they need goals the most? Or was a change of scenery necessary to unlock the best version of the young Mexican forward?
