Messi hits out at MLS transfer rules: “major changes are needed”
The World Cup winner gave an interview to NBC News and took the opportunity to send a message to Major League Soccer.

Lionel Messi still has plenty of chapters left to write in Major League Soccer. The legendary Argentine recently extended his contract with Inter Miami through 2028, ensuring that Las Garzas will continue to count on his presence as they aim to maintain the highest standards in North American soccer.
In an interview with NBC News, conducted by journalist Tom Llamas, Messi reflected on the sport’s evolution in the United States since his arrival. “Yes, I think so,” he said when asked whether he’s seen significant growth.
“Today, the Inter Miami brand has become very strong, not only in the United States but around the world. I think the club has gone through a major transformation and has grown in every area: sporting, institutional, and organizational.”
Timeless.

“There’s still plenty of room for further growth and improvement”
He added, “There’s still plenty of room for further growth and improvement in all aspects. There’s a very solid foundation, the clubs are ready, and they truly want to achieve this growth. I think now is the right moment, but major changes are needed for the teams to keep progressing.”
Messi then sent a clear message to MLS leadership regarding the league’s Designated Player rules:
“For this development to happen, every team needs the freedom to sign the players they want, without restrictions or regulations holding them back. Today, every club has the resources and capability to do so, and I believe that if they were given this freedom, many great players would come.”
While Inter Miami continues to chase the dream of winning the 2025 MLS Cup, the club’s board is already looking ahead to the 2026 season. Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are set to retire once this campaign ends, and with Messi’s renewal confirmed and Rodrigo De Paul expected to join the Designated Player list, the Fort Lauderdale franchise would open up one more spot for a world-class signing.

It’s also worth noting that if Luis Suárez signs an extension with Inter Miami, he would likely remain under the salary cap, giving the South Florida side additional flexibility. Combined with the long-awaited opening of Miami Freedom Park next year, all signs suggest that Las Garzas could be preparing for another major acquisition.
