Update:

Manchester United secured a dramatic late victory over rivals Liverpool on Sunday, ending a torrid recent record at Anfield.

A pulsating game was settled with a Harry Maguire header in the 84th minute, inflicting a fourth consecutive defeat on a floundering Liverpool side. It was the first back-to-back victory for United this season and it ended a long winless record away at Liverpool.

Before Sunday’s win, United had not won a Premier League game at Anfield since January 2016. On that day, Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney combined to give Louis van Gaal’s team a narrow 1-0 win.

United started strongly against the reigning champions, taking the lead through Bryan Mbuemo in the second minute. Ruben Amorim’s side have rarely convinced this season but they acquitted themselves well against Liverpool, denying the hosts any real sights of goal until Cody Gakpo finished from close range with 12 minutes of normal time remaining.

It looked like the momentum was shifting in Liverpool’s favor until Bruno Fernandes deftly lofted a cross into the box, finding the head of Maguire in the middle. The defender made no mistake and sent a delirious away end into raptures with the crucial late goal.

It had been a long time coming for United fans, who have suffered 7-0 and 4-0 losses at Anfield in recent visits. This time, it was the Manchester contingent who will be heading home happy.
