Ciudad de México Update:

It was a rough Saturday for Mexican soccer. Colombia, already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, thrashed Javier Aguirre’s team 0-4 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It may only have been a friendly match, but the result is a resounding blow to El Tri in their preparation for next summer’s event which they will co-host.

The loss capped off a brutal day for Mexico. The U-20 team were eliminated from the U-20 World Cup in Chile just hours earlier, losing their quarter final 0-2 to Argentina.

Thrashed in Dallas

From the opening whistle, Colombia took control. Defender Jhon Lucumí opened the scoring after 16 minutes, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Luis Díaz added a second goal in the 56th minute, followed by Jefferson Lerma’s strike in the 64th. Johan Carbonero sealed the rout in the 87th minute, leaving Mexico reeling in front of a disappointed crowd deep in the heart of Texas.

“This is our reality… ,“ Aguirre admitted afterwards. ”We cannot afford to be so uncompetitive during certain points of the game. The person who is most to blame for that is me”.
