México Update:

A recent study revealed that interest in the FIFA World Cup exceeds that of Liga MX among Mexican fans. According to the PEAK Fan Insights report, 51% of the Mexican population expresses a high level of interest in the World Cup tournament, while 48% regularly follow the domestic top flight.

Although the difference between both is small, the data reflects a trend that is repeated in most of the countries analyzed: The World Cup generates a greater emotional and media impact than domestic competitions. The only exceptions from the survey were, surprisingly Brazil and Turkey where more fans are interested in their local leagues than in the World Cup.

The report, titled FIFA World Cup vs Domestic League Interest, measures interest in both events as a percentage of the population. In total, it analyzes data from more than a dozen countries, including Argentina, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the United States. In Mexico’s case, the difference between the two indicators confirms the enormous magnetism the World Cup exerts every four years.

Furthermore, Mexico is among the countries with the highest level of general global interest in football, above European powers such as France (35%), Spain (45%) or England (36%) in relation to the World Cup.

Beyond the numbers, the data suggests a challenge for national soccer: transforming World Cup fervor into sustained interest in Liga MX, boosting its competitiveness, visibility, and emotional connection with fans. “The World Cup remains the most powerful event in soccer, even in markets where the local league is strong,” concludes the PEAK Fan Insights report.
