Alarm bells ring in Madrid as Mbappé goes down injured for France
The Real Madrid forward requested a substitution in the 80th minute of the France-Azerbaijan match and limped straight to the changing room.
Mbappé played, scored… and gave everyone a scare. The French superstar from Real Madrid left the pitch limping near the end of France’s match against Azerbaijan. The Madrid forward, who opened the scoring at the Parc des Princes, asked to be substituted in the 80th minute and went straight down the tunnel to the locker room.
L’Équipe reported that Kylian had taken a knock — something later confirmed by Deschamps himself. “He took another hit on the same ankle. The pain eases when he rests. In a match, there are always contacts. We’ll assess it afterward. He’s feeling some discomfort, which isn’t ideal for him,” said the France coach on TF1.
Mbappé’s participation in the match against Azerbaijan had been in doubt for much of the week. The Bondy-born forward joined up with the national team nursing a knock to his right ankle, sustained in Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal. The injury had kept him from training with the rest of the squad during the first few days at Clairefontaine.
He eventually started, scored the opener, and stayed on the pitch until he couldn’t continue. His replacement, Florian Thauvin, scored almost immediately after coming on.
