Will Michael Penix Jr. play for the Falcons against the Dolphins on Sunday? Atlanta QB injury report
With Penix Jr. nursing a knee injury, Kirk Cousins could make his return as the Falcons face the Dolphins in Week 8.

Whether Michael Penix Jr. or Kirk Cousins starts at quarterback remains the big question surrounding the Atlanta Falcons ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Penix Jr. limited in practice after knee injury
Penix Jr., who has led the Falcons to a 3-3 start this season, has been limited in practice throughout the week after suffering a bone bruise in his knee during Atlanta’s Week 7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite the setback, the 25-year-old told reporters Wednesday that he expects to play against the Dolphins. Two days later, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said he was confident his starting quarterback would be available, although he added that naming the starter could be a game-day decision.
Cousins taking “significant” reps
Morris also revealed that Cousins, Penix Jr.’s backup, had taken “significant” reps this week, which could increase the likelihood of him starting. Is it simply a case of Atlanta covering all bases, or should fans read more into it?
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it is “highly likely” that Cousins will start against Miami. Falcons fans may have to wait until game day to find out for sure.
A tale of two quarterbacks
Penix Jr. and Cousins both joined the Falcons in 2024, with the rookie spending most of last season behind the veteran. Cousins went 7-7 through 14 games before being benched in favor of Penix Jr., who finished the year 1-2 over the final three weeks of the regular season.
Despite finishing second in the NFC South, Atlanta missed out on the playoffs, which they have not reached since 2017.
