Update:

The Jacksonville Jaguars made one of the more intriguing late moves ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, acquiring wide receiver Jakobi Meyers from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round picks in the 2026 draft. Now, as the Jaguars prepare to face the Houston Texans this Sunday in Week 10, will Meyers make his debut?

Jaguars coach hints at possible Jakobi Meyers role

At 5-3, the Jaguars are in the thick of the AFC South race and firmly in the playoff conversation. The team’s new general manager, James Gladstone, has shown an aggressive approach to roster building, and this trade is just the latest example of that.

With Travis Hunter placed on Injured Reserve and Brian Thomas Jr. struggling to find consistency, Jacksonville needed another reliable pass-catcher for Trevor Lawrence. Meyers, who had 70 catches for 807 yards and eight touchdowns with the Raiders last season, brings veteran knowledge and route-running precision to the young receiving corps.

Meyers officially joined the Jaguars on Wednesday after being traded just hours before the deadline. While that gives him limited time to learn the playbook, head coach Liam Coen indicated the staff is working quickly to get him ready.

“The challenge is the balance of how much he can handle, how quickly he can get some of the formations down,” Coen said. “It’ll really come down to what things specifically we want to get him in the flow of the game. You want to get him opportunities, but also just to go play as a Jaguar.

That suggests the Jaguars could use Meyers in a limited, situational role, like third-down packages or red-zone formations, where his strong hands and spatial awareness can make an immediate impact. His chemistry with Lawrence will be a key factor, and the pair reportedly began working on timing drills shortly after his arrival in Jacksonville.

The Texans defense ranks near the top in fewest yards allowed per game. With multiple offensive starters either injured or questionable in Jacksonville, including Dyami Brown and Brenton Strange, Meyers’ availability could be crucial in keeping Jacksonville’s passing attack efficient.

If he does take the field against Houston, don’t expect a full workload, but a few key catches from the former Raider could still make a big difference in a divisional showdown. If he’s not fully active this week, expect him to be integrated more heavily after the bye.
