Update:

The Steelers return to the practice field Wednesday but Aaron Rodgers won’t be suiting up to take part. The veteran QB fractured a bone in his left wrist during the first half of Sunday’s 34-12 home victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Head coach Mike Tomlin explained that Rodgers will sit out Wednesday’s session and will be assessed again later in the week. The good news is that surgery has been ruled out.

Rodgers to be assessed in Friday’s practice

Tomlin wouldn’t be drawn on whether he thinks Rodgers will be fit enough to play Sunday’s clash against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Friday’s practice will determine whether he plays or not.

“That’s just what I have in my mind,” the coach told reporters. “I know he’s not working (in Wednesday’s practice), but certainly I assume it’s going to be a little later in the week, and in the meanwhile it’ll give us an opportunity to really get solid with a plan or physical preparation around the other two (Mason Rudolph and Will Howard).”

He added: “The variables are stabilizing it and making sure that he’s safe and he can protect himself, brace himself as he falls, etc., pain tolerance. But that doesn’t seem to be an issue with Aaron. He wanted to go back in the game on Sunday. He’s the type of guy and has the type of profile that doesn’t require a lot of physical work in an effort to be ready to play”.

Rudolph ready

If Tomlin decides not to risk Rodgers, or feels that he won’t be able to deliver his best, backup QB Mason Rudolph will be given the nod against the Bears. In the meantime, much of this week’s work will be centered around Rudolph.

In his second half performance against the Bengals, Rudolph completed 12 of 16 passes for 127 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kenneth Gainwell for a passer rating of 118.5. The Steelers’ record with Rudolph as a starter is 8-5-1.
