Why isn’t J.J. McCarthy playing for the Vikings against the Eagles in Week 7?

Update:

Minnesota quarterback Carson Wentz will be under center again this week, as the Vikings face the Eagles in Minneapolis. The 32-year-old, who joined the NFL franchise in August, has previously been signal caller for the Eagles, the Colts, the Commanders, the Raiders and the Chiefs.

What injury does J.J. McCarthy have?

Wentz has been handed his chance with the Vikings - a team he supported as a youngster - after McCarthy was ruled out with an ankle sprain.

McCarthy, 22, took part in practice this week, but has been ruled out for Week 7. “I do feel that him having the two games experience and then even if it is a long break now he can actually conceptualize what it means to be a starting quarterback,” Jamie Erdahl said on ‘The Rich Eisen Show’. “When he was sitting in meetings last year, he had no concept of what the speed of the game felt like or what the IQ demands were of the playbook. It could be explained to him, but now he’s got a two-game sample size.”

“I think he needs to be like 110 percent healthy before we even then add another week and then get him in there,” Erdahl said, “But they’ve got two games in five days next week coming off a bye, so I think we see Carson for a little bit, and I’m okay with that.”

“Really impressive”

It was a really impressive week from a guy that clearly has played a lot of football in the NFL,” the Minnesota head coach said. “I know he’s very much looking forward to this opportunity.”

O’Connell added: “I’ve really enjoyed being around him. I think he’s got a great presence with the guys, he’s got a great ability to understand what this situation is.

“[It’s] a great opportunity for him to play with some great players on a team he’s obviously excited to play for, in front of a fan base as one of them, from growing up."
