Who is Tyrod Taylor? Possibly the starting quarterback for the New York Jets after Justin Fields was carted off from training after injuring his toe. We don’t know how severe it was but the quarterback, who signed a two-year deal with the Jets in March, was hobbling gingerly.

And if Fields is out of action, the man likely to step up is Tyrod Taylor, who was back up to Aaron Rodgers before the Jets and the California-born quarterback parted ways.

Tyrod Taylor: NFL veteran

It feels odd to introduce Taylor as he’s a 14-year veteran in the NFL, but there’s a possibility you don’t know much about him. He has been a starter in the league before, but it’s been a while. His last start was seven seasons ago, in 2017 with the Buffalo Bills. You should also know he has a history of injuries, so the Jets have reason to be a little nervous right now, with Fields being checked by the medics.

The 35-year-old was brought on to be Rodgers’ backup and he’s been known to do something Rodgers didn’t - take risks downfield. He’s also well-liked in the locker room.

Through his 58 career starts, Taylor is 28-28-1 as a starting quarterback and 4-8 over the last three years. Back in 2017, Taylor led the Bills to the playoffs after a 17-year drought, before they traded up for Josh Allen in the draft the next year. His contract is just $6.8 million for the 2025 season.

Right now, we’re all waiting to see how severe Justin Fields’ injury is and whether Tyrod Taylor might get the call.

The Jets start preseason against the Packers on 9 August, while their opening game of the season is against the Steelers, where Aaron Rodgers went after leaving.
