The Minnesota Vikings will be without quarterback Carson Wentz for the remainder of the season after the veteran opted for shoulder surgery on his non-throwing arm. Wentz, who started five games in relief of injured J.J. McCarthy, has been placed on injured reserve.
Details on Carson Wentz: In the first half of the London game, Wentz suffered a dislocation that tore his labrum and fractured the socket, per The Insiders.

Wentz sustained the injury in Week 5 against the Browns in London but played through significant pain for several weeks, including during Minnesota’s recent 37–10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, where he was sacked five times before exiting early. The 10-year veteran went 2–3 as a starter, throwing for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing 65.1% of his passes.
JJ McCarthy expected to return for the Vikings
With Wentz sidelined, the Vikings expect McCarthy to return from a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer will move up to the backup role behind him.

Wentz’s gritty play briefly kept the Vikings afloat, including a heroic Week 5 performance when he led a game-winning drive while completing all nine of his passes. But at 3–4 and last in the NFC North, Minnesota will now turn back to McCarthy in hopes of salvaging its season. And Wentz’s future in the NFL could once again be uncertain as he recovers from surgery.
The Vikings will face the Detroit Lions on Sunday, November 2 at Ford Field with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET.
