Stephen A. Smith slams Colts for quarterback choice: “That’s a bad, bad, bad sign”
The Indianapolis Colts have announced their starting quarterback for the 2025 season and it’s not gone down well.

After months of uncertainty, the Indianapolis Colts have announced their starting quarterback for the 2025. Unfortunately, it may not prove to be a popular choice.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen has named Daniel Jones as the starter this year, giving the veteran free agent the starting jersey despite his troubles in recent years. Jones was selected ahead of Anthony Richardson Sr., who the Colts drafted with the No. 4 overall pick at the 2023 NFL Draft.
Speaking about the decision on ESPN on Tuesday, analyst Stephen A. Smith questioned how the Colts had got to a point where Jones is the starter.
“Boy does that show a lack of faith in Richardson, who they spent a top four pick on,” Smith began. “It’s bad for him.”
“There’s nobody out here who believes hat Daniel Jones is a worthy starter for your franchise. Hes got skills, he can make some plays, but his career record with the New York Giants of 24-44-1 as a starter speaks for itself.”
“We’ve seen more blooper reels from Danial Jones than highlights. And he’s your starter, over a guy that you spent a top four pick on just a few years ago? That’s a bad, bad, bad sign,” Smith added.
For his part, Jones was much more positive about the announcement and stressed that he is confident that this group can have a successful season. He signed a one-year deal worth $14 million back in March and he is eager to make good on the show of faith.
“I think that was obviously a big piece of why I came here, to be on the field and to be with this group,” Jones said. “I think it’s a strong group of players, as I said, and a strong group of coaches, the system.
“I think there’s a lot of things here to be excited about, so yeah, I’m certainly happy I made the decision.”
