Steelers add former Patriots standout to strengthen defensive backfield
Pittsburgh acquires safety Kyle Dugger from New England, shoring up their secondary as DeShon Elliott heads to injured reserve.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have acquired safety Kyle Dugger from the New England Patriots, adding a proven playmaker to their defensive backfield. The move comes as the Steelers place safety DeShon Elliott on injured reserve.
Dugger’s role in New England
Dugger has been a key part of the Patriots’ defense since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. However, under head coach Mike Vrabel, his role has diminished, starting four of seven games this season. Jaylinn Hawkins and Craig Woodson have shared the starting safety duties for New England.

Trade details
The Patriots sent Dugger along with a 2026 seventh-round draft pick to the Steelers in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round selection.
Dugger signed a four-year, $58 million contract extension in April 2024. The Patriots will cover most of the remaining $5.4 million base salary for 2025, and Dugger will become a free agent during the next offseason.
New England continues roster changes
This move follows the trade of defensive end Keion White, who was sent to the San Francisco 49ers for a late-round 2026 draft pick.
