Rams coach Sean McVay has given an update on QB Matthew Stafford: here’s what he said
Ahead of the start of the 2025 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams are sweating on the fitness of first-choice quarterback Stafford.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has assured fans that veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford will be ready for the regular season despite ongoing back discomfort. However, the 37-year-old signal-caller may miss the entirety of training camp as the team takes a cautious, week-to-week approach.
“We feel like that’s the smart thing to do”
Stafford is aiming to be fully fit for the Rams’ Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium. To ensure that, McVay, along with the Rams’ medical team - led by VP of Sports Medicine Reggie Scott and renowned spine surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins - has opted for a conservative recovery plan.
“The ultimate goal is Houston, and being mindful of that,” McVay said. “So we’ll take it a week at a time with him. Based on sitting down with Reggie, and with Matthew, and talking with Dr. Watkins, we feel like that’s the smart thing to do.”
Now entering his 16th NFL season and fifth with the Rams since being traded from the Detroit Lions in 2021, Stafford has been a cornerstone of the franchise. In 57 games with Los Angeles, he’s thrown for 14,700 yards, 95 touchdowns and 44 interceptions. Most notably, he led the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
But with age and injuries catching up, the Rams are preparing for all scenarios.

Who are the QBs in the Rams’ backup plan?
If Stafford isn’t ready for the season opener, the Rams have two quarterbacks waiting in the wings. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, now in his 12th NFL season and second with the Rams, is the primary backup. Behind him is Stetson Bennett IV, the former Georgia standout who’s looking to solidify his place in the league after a rocky start to his pro career.
