Pittsburgh Steelers get huge potential postseason boost as sought-after free agent signs

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to their practice squad, adding a veteran presence to a banged-up secondary. Samuel, recently named one of the NFL’s top 25 free agents still available, brings both experience and playmaking ability to Pittsburgh.

Recovery after spinal fusion surgery

Samuel underwent spinal fusion surgery in April but has reportedly made a full recovery and is in excellent shape. The 26-year-old has played in 50 games, starting 47, and has recorded 76 tackles and six interceptions in his career. Though he’ll begin on the practice squad, the Steelers may look to activate him soon given their current injury concerns.

Steelers’ secondary plagued by injuries

Cornerback Darius Slay remains in concussion protocol after a helmet-to-helmet collision with teammate Kyle Dugger during the game against the Los Angeles Chargers. That leaves Pittsburgh relying on James Pierre, Brandin Echols, and Joey Porter Jr. at cornerback.

Meanwhile, Jalen Ramsey has shifted from cornerback to safety over the past two games to help fill gaps in the defensive backfield caused by a string of injuries.
