Update:

Patrick Mahomes is on the verge of adding another milestone to his already historic resume, and he will likely do so this week when the Kansas City Chiefs face the Washington Commanders.

Mahomes on track to join exclusive NFL club on Monday

The Chiefs quarterback enters Monday night’s matchup against the Commanders needing just 34 passing yards to reach 40,000 career yards, including postseason play. That puts him on pace to become only the second quarterback in NFL history to reach the mark within his first nine seasons, joining Peyton Manning (41,082 from 1998–2006).

Since becoming the Chiefs’ starter in 2018, Mahomes has redefined the modern passing game. He’s led the team to four Super Bowl appearances, including three Super Bowl victories, won two MVP awards, and compiled a 100–35 record (including playoffs) - the best winning percentage in the league over that span.

If Mahomes reaches the 40,000-yard milestone on Monday, he’ll add another chapter to a career that’s been defined by efficiency and consistency. The 30-year-old averages more than 300 passing yards per game, a number unmatched among active quarterbacks with at least 80 starts.

Beyond the numbers, Mahomes’ early-career dominance has positioned him on a trajectory that rivals some of the game’s greatest passers. Manning hit 40,000 in his ninth season. Tom Brady didn’t get there until his 10th. Now, as Kansas City looks to climb back above .500, Mahomes’ next big milestone might come in front of a national audience.
