MVP Race after Week 5: Allen stay at top, Mahomes sneaks in second, Lamar drops

There are no undefeated teams after Week 5 and there are no clear Super Bowl favorites at this stage of the season, but there is a clear MVP favorite.

Update:

The Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles both went down in Week 5 to put an end to any undefeated dreams either fan base might have had. While the Bills were stunned by the Patriots, and Drake Maye might have outperformed Josh Allen but the reigning MVP is still the out and out favorite to repeat after five weeks.

Here are the MVP favorites after Week 5 according to our friends at MGM Grand.

Josh Allen, QB Buffalo Bills (+140)

Allen and the Bills lost their first game of the season on Sunday night against the Pats. Their reign of dominance might be slipping in the AFC East as New England gets closer and closer to closing the gap. Allen had 253 yards and 2 TDs but fumbled a handoff and threw an INT in the red zone that opened the door for the Pats to take a two score lead. Allen wasn’t the MVP last year because of his numbers, he was the MVP cause he didn’t make those mistakes that cost his team the game. Despite the loss and the costly INT, he’s still at the top of the odds makers board.

Pass stats: CMP: 70%, YDS: 1,008, TD: 7, INT: 1, RTG: 107.5

Rush stats: CAR: 40, YDS: 212, TD: 3

Patrick Mahomes, QB Kansas City Chiefs (+450)

Like Allen, Mahomes and the Chiefs lost their game in Week 5, but Mahomes looked like the MVP QB that we saw circa 2022 for the second straight week. With Xavier Worthy back on the filed Mahomes has been liberated and the offense is back to looking like they can score in a moments notice. Unfortunately KC was knocking on the Jags door, but Mahomes threw a pick six on the one and that would end up costing the Chiefs dearly on Monday night.

Pass stats: CMP: 63.4%, YDS: 1,257, TD: 8, INT: 2, RTG: 93.5

Rush stats: CAR: 28, YDS: 190, TD: 3

Baker Mayfield, QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+800)

If we are going by stats, and by sheer entertainment then Baker Mayfield should be at the top of this list. If we are going by records, then Mayfield should be on the top of this list to at 4-1 just like the Bills, and Eagles and Lions. The only reason Mayfield is this far down the list is because he’s nevr really been in this conversation before. If he can keep it up watch those odds plummet.

Pass stats: CMP: 65.1%, YDS: 1,283, TD: 10, INT: 1, RTG: 104.4

Rush stats: CAR: 19, YDS: 144, TD: 0

Jordan Love, QB Green Bay Packers (+1200)

Jordan Love spent the week licking his wounds and trying to straighten the ship after a couple of slip ups in the last few weeks after a strong start to the season. Somehow Love jumped into the 4th spot on the MVP odds board after his BYE week. He and the Packers need to figure some things out or else Green Bay is going to slide down the NFC ladder and Love will slide down the MVP board.

Pass stats: CMP: 69.4, YDS: 1,000, TD: 8, INT: 1, RTG: 113.5

Rush stats: CAR: 13, YDS: 62, TD: 0

Matthew Stafford, QB LA Rams (+1500)

Another losing QB to round out the top five of the MVP leaderboard after Week 5. Stafford and the Rams dropped their Sunday night game to the San Francisco 49ers despite Matt Stafford throwing for almost 400 yards and three TDs. Hard to chalk this loss up to the gun slinger when his RB Kyren Williams fumbled the go ahead TD one the 1 yard line with under 2:00 minutes left. I would have loved to see Stafford with the ball in his hand on the 4th and 1 play in OT, but it was Williams who got the handoff and was stopped short of the marker to drop the Rams to 3-2.

Pass stats: CMP: 66.7%, YDS: 1,503, TD: 11, INT: 2, RTG: 107.3

Rush stats: CAR: 11, YDS: -4, TD: 0
