Update:

The Chargers’ receiver room is undergoing a transition following the retirement of Mike Williams and the departure of Joshua Palmer in free agency. To help fill the void, the team drafted two rookie receivers: Tre Harris (Ole Miss) and KeAndre Lambert-Smith (Auburn), both of whom are expected to take on significant roles.

They do still have Ladd McConkey though, and he had a breakout rookie season last year. And at training camp, he’s already turning heads as head coach Jim Harbaugh heaps praise on him and the rest of the Chargers’ wide receiver corps.

Harbaugh: ‘Uncoverable’ Ladd McConkey even better than last season

Last season, McConkey led the team in targets (112), receptions (82), and receiving yards (1,179), quickly establishing himself as quarterback Justin Herbert’s top target.

Now entering year two, McConkey is earning glowing praise from Harbaugh, who called him “uncoverable” in one-on-one matchups. Harbaugh added that McConkey is “even better than he was last year” and said both McConkey and fellow receiver Quentin Johnston are playing at an “elite level.”

“We are really fired up with our receiver group. We think we are better,” Harbaugh said on Wednesday. “Quentin, every part of his game is elite. Ladd, he’s even better than he was last year. It’s going to sound like hyperbole. It’s not. He’s uncoverable right now [one on one]. That’s awesome.”

Johnston was the Chargers’ first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Last year, he logged 55 catches, 711 yards, and eight touchdowns, and now he’s looking to add another solid season in 2025.

McConkey, now a leader among the group, praised the rookies for adapting quickly and playing with more confidence as camp progresses.

“They’re getting better and better every day,” McConkey said. “You come in during OTAs and you’re running around with your head cut off and have no idea what’s going on ... but now you can see them starting to play more fast and more free.”
