Update:

Things feel different in Oxnard this year as the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2025 NFL season. After falling to 7-10 record and missing the playoffs last year, the Cowboys fired head coach Mike McCarthy and promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to replace McCarthy.

While that move was met with an underwhelmed response by fans, who rightfully wondered how a man whose offense was ranked outside the top 10 in every major category (including 27th in rushing yards) and who’s never been a head coach before, should be trusted to turn things around in Dallas.

But now that training camp has started, the players have nothing but positive things to say about Schotty and the difference in the vibe is palpable.

Cowboys’ new offensive scheme exciting players like KaVontae Turpin

Since he became head coach, Schottenheimer has vowed to change the atmosphere in the locker room, and he’s definitely more of a friend to the players than McCarthy or Jason Garrett ever were. Of course, the real test will be how the offense performs on the field. But for now, the players are excited. Especially ace punt return specialist KaVontae Turpin.

Under McCarthy’s offense, Turpin was used sparingly but explosively. But he believes Schottenheimer trusts him more and is putting him in a better position to succeed.

“I’m way more excited,” Turpin said. “You know me and Schotty got the trust. I’m just trying to go out there and make plays. Schotty know that I’m trying to make plays. So, we both on the same page right now.”

Turpin has been getting significant reps at running back during the Cowboys’ first training camp practices in Oxnard, suggesting a bigger offensive role in 2025. His elite speed and playmaking ability, highlighted by a 64-yard touchdown last year, make him a unique weapon. With 315 offensive snaps last season (up from 140 the year before), Turpin looks poised to become a more regular fixture in Schottenheimer’s offense.
