Update:

Seven games into the season, the New York Jets are still winless and there are now real questions being asked of starting quarterback Justin Fields.

Earlier this year the Jets handed Fields a two-year $40 million contract, hoping that he could be the long-term solution at quarterback. With the team now at 0-7 the experiment has not gone to plan and team owner Woody Johnson appears to have seen enough.

Speaking to reporters at the NFL Fall Meeting in New York on Tuesday, Johnson insisted that Fields’ future is “completely up to” head coach Aaron Glenn. However Johnson did not shy away from criticism of Fields.

If we can just complete a pass, it would look good," the Jets owner said of the struggling team.

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got. I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving. ... You have to play consistently at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the remainder of the season.”

Across six starts in 2025, Fields has recorded a Total QBR score of just 32.1, the lowest of his career to date. He is currently 31st out of 33 eligible quarterbacks in the league and the Jets have scored just seven touchdowns in the last six games.

Last weekend’s did seem to be a significant shift in the quarterback position as head coach Glenn decided to bench Fields at halftime. Backup Tyrod Taylor played the second half of last Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers and he is in-line to take over from Fields. It’s a big decision for Glenn going forward but he appears to have the full support of the team owner.

“I do believe in Aaron,” Johnson said of his head coach. “I’ve known Aaron since 1996 [when] I was a fan. I’ve always been a fan of him. I see the way he handles the room. If I were a player, I’d respond to him because he’s the real deal. No B.S. No second agendas. What you’re hearing is the truth, and a lot of times players don’t get the truth. They get a lot of gobbledygook.”
