Update:

Jerry Jones’ attempts to retool the Dallas Cowboys over the offseason were not entirely successful but the team’s owner and general manager has revealed that he may sanction further trades before the deadline.

NFL teams have three weeks until the league’s trade deadline and the Cowboys have the resources to make a significant move. Jones has an extra first-round pick for both the 2026 and 2027 NFL Drafts and $31 million in salary cap space, both consequences of Micah Parsons’ departure to the Green Bay Packers.

“Well, if there is a trade that would help the defense, we’re in position to make that trade,” Jones said Monday, when asked about a potential move before the deadline.

“It just reminded me that we are still in it,” Jones said at an announcement that the Ford Center will host the East-West Shrine Bowl in January 2026.

“I see much parity and then you factor in that these teams get compromised with injury - and we can have and may [have it too] - but if we should have some good go of it here over the next weeks ahead with our injury situation and return of injury and we can get some wins.”

“The last thing that I’m thinking about is in any way being out of the hunt.”

Whatever he says publicly, Jones will be aware of the need to improve the team’s defense. The Cowboys are currently worst in the league for yards allowed per game (411.7) and second-worst for points conceded per game (30.7). Despite the inspirational form of Dak Prescott, Dallas will struggle to find real rhythm until they have addressed that defensive weakness.
