Update:

It’s been a chaotic few days for fans of the New York Giants. On Monday head coach Brian Daboll was fired, coming one day after rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was ruled out due to injury.

Mike Kafka has been announced as an interim head coach, while experienced QB Jameis Winston has been named as a the man to deputize for Dart.

Dart suffered a heavy hit in last weekend’s loss to the Chicago Bears and is currently sidelined as part of the league’s concussion protocol. Rather than elevating the more established Russell Wilson, Kafka has decided to give Winston the nod.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Winston seemed in good spirits and even broke into song at one point.

“This is something that I’ve been doing since I was four years old, and now I get to do it, 'In the greatest city in the world’."

Winston was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 1 pick of the 2015 draft. He spent five years in Tampa Bay, and led the league for passing yards in 2019.

He left for the New Orleans Saints in 2020 but was never a regular starter during his three seasons with the team. He moved on to the Cleveland Browns, where he did have a solid run in the team during the 2024 season, before signing with the Giants earlier this year.

“I was just grateful. Just grateful that I had this amazing opportunity,” Winston said on Wednesday. “I’m so happy and grateful I get to be the starting quarterback for the New York Giants this week.”

“I love my teammates. I just want to see us turn it around. … I want to see it through. I haven’t asked for a release or anything like that. I want to be here.“
