Update:

The viewership figures for the Miami Dolphins - Washington Commanders International Game, which marked the NFL’s first official game in Spain last Sunday, are now public.

The data reinforces the feeling that the gamble to bring a regular season game to Spain has paid off for the NFL.

A report released on Wednesday lists the average audience of 5.9 million viewers for the NFL Network broadcast, with a peak of 8 million in the last 13 minutes. That ranks as one of the five most-watched NFL International Games on record.

Across the board there was a substantial boost in viewership for this year’s overseas game, with a 32% increase compared to the figures from last year. These figures speak volumes about the great success of this international expansion of the league.

The game was a big success for Madrid as a host city, too. Officials estimate that the impact of that single game boosted the local economy by around $197 million, including significant amounts spent in hotels, bars and restaurants by the approximately 42,000 international visitors who traveled to the Spanish capital for the game.
