Donald Trump wants to leave his mark on American professional sports. The President of the United States has already been involved with FIFA, the NFL, Major League Baseball, and other sporting organisations. Now, the 47th US president reportedly wants his name immortalised on a stadium.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Trump wants the Washington Commanders to name their next stadium after him. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in an email to ESPN that such a move would be fitting, as the businessman-turned-politician had played a key role in securing the stadium’s construction permit.

That would be a beautiful name, since it was President Trump who made the construction of the new stadium possible,” Leavitt told the Massachusetts-based outlet.

However, Trump has previously threatened to block the project. In July, he stated that he would prevent the stadium’s construction if the Washington franchise refused to revert to its former name, the Redskins.

The Commanders will play in the new stadium under a lease agreement with the District of Columbia Council, which approved the project on 17 September after the team pledged to invest $2.7 million.

A federal agency also has a say in the matter. The National Park Service, which manages the land where the new facility will be built, holds authority over the site. As a result, the final decision on the stadium’s name does not rest solely with the Commanders.

The new venue is scheduled to be ready for the 2030 NFL season and will be constructed on the site of the former Robert F. Kennedy Stadium. Plans call for a 65,000-seat stadium on a 174-acre site located just two miles from the US Capitol.
