Week 11’s Sunday Night Football delivered one of the most anticipated games on the schedule. The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Detroit Lions at Lincoln Financial Field and pulled out a gritty 16-9 win in a game defined by defense and difficult weather conditions that shaped nearly every possession.

Hurts provides the only touchdown

Quarterback Jalen Hurts scored the lone touchdown for Philadelphia on a night when the offense struggled to find rhythm. The Eagles briefly thought they had another score when running back Saquon Barkley crossed the goal line, but the touchdown was overturned after review because the ball was ruled short.

Hurts finished with only 135 passing yards. Barkley ran for 83. Wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith were kept unusually quiet. Kicker Jake Elliott provided most of the scoring, hitting field goals from 27, 34 and 49 yards.

Lions undone by fourth-down gambles

Detroit stayed true to coach Dan Campbell’s aggressive identity, going for it on fourth down five times and failing on all five attempts. The Lions also converted only 3 of 13 third downs, stalling drives that could have changed the game.

Quarterback Jared Goff completed 14 of 37 passes for 255 yards and found Jameson Williams for a 40-yard touchdown late in the second quarter that tied the game at 6-6. Williams celebrated by jumping onto the goalpost padding and hugging it, which drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the extra point attempt. With swirling winds in the stadium, kicker Jake Bates pushed the kick wide, preventing Detroit from taking the lead.

Philly stays in the race for the NFC’s top seed

The Eagles remain firmly in the hunt for the NFC’s No. 1 seed. Along with the Los Angeles Rams, they are one of just two teams sitting at 8-2.

Philadelphia now heads to AT&T Stadium for a crucial matchup with the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday. The Lions will return home to host the New York Giants at Ford Field in Week 12.
