Update:

Drew Brees is stepping back into the spotlight, but this time, not under center. According to The Athletic, the future Hall of Famer is joining Fox Sports as an NFL game analyst, a move that could end Mark Sanchez’s run with the network.

Mark Sanchez out? Drew Brees in at Fox

Sanchez, 38, has been off the air since early October after being involved in a late-night altercation in Indianapolis that left him hospitalized with stab wounds. Police later charged Sanchez with Level 5 felony battery after the incident, which also injured a 69-year-old truck driver. Sanchez pleaded not guilty and said he is “focused on recovery”, but Fox quietly removed him from broadcasts following the arrest. His future with the network remains uncertain, but the Brees hire makes it seem unlikely that he’ll return.

For Brees, this marks a second chance at a broadcasting career that didn’t quite take off the first time. After a brief stint with NBC following his retirement in 2020, Brees faded from weekly coverage, focusing instead on occasional studio appearances and special broadcasts. His addition to Fox’s game roster signals both a professional revival and a chance to prove he belongs among the elite of NFL commentators.

Sources told The Athletic that Brees, 46, will make his debut as soon as next week and is expected to call games with play-by-play announcer Adam Amin. That partnership was previously held by Sanchez.

Brees’ signing gives Fox one of the most star-powered lineups in sports broadcasting, with Tom Brady, Greg Olsen, and now Brees all under the same umbrella. Networks are increasingly investing in familiar NFL faces to boost engagement and credibility.

While Brees’ first foray into television at NBC drew mixed reviews, he’s reportedly been eager to return and show that he’s grown as an analyst. His calm presence and football IQ could make him a strong fit for Fox’s coverage, which balances personality-driven commentary with technical insight.
