Update:

Running back Javonte Williams was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2021 and played there for four seasons. When his rookie contract ended, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys and has had a spectacular start there through seven weeks.

This Sunday, he and the Cowboys will travel to Denver, where he’ll face his former team for the first time since then. In an emotional return, however, Williams has nothing but positive things to say about his former team.

“I loved the team”: Javonte Williams gets candid ahead of Broncos return

With the Broncos, Williams showed flashes of stardom before a devastating knee injury cut his second season short. Despite his eventual departure in free agency, Williams says he has no hard feelings toward his former team, reflecting fondly on his time in Denver and the relationships he built there.

“It was just a good atmosphere,” Williams said. “I loved the team, I loved the staff, the coaches. I had a good time. It probably didn’t go the way I wanted it to go, but I mean, I’m here now.”

Now thriving in Dallas, Williams has become a key piece of the Cowboys’ offense. Through seven weeks, he ranks second in the NFL in rushing yards (592) and already has a career-high six touchdowns, a remarkable comeback for a player once unsure if he’d ever regain full form. Williams credits both physical recovery methods like acupuncture (suggested by teammate CeeDee Lamb) and his mental approach to the game.

“I feel like, mentally, I’m on a different level just understanding the plays,” he said. “You’re not going to beat people with just pure talent. You’ve got to actually have a plan.”

As he prepares for his emotional return to Empower Field, Williams insists it’s not about revenge, but rather helping Dallas move to 4-3-1. “I’m just going to go out there and play my game, do what I’ve got to do, and try to make plays for my teammates,” he said.
