Chiefs 28 vs 31 Jaguars summary, stats, score and highlights | NFL Week 5

Trevor Lawrence came up with some huge throws late in the game, but his biggest play of the night was almost one of the worst bloopers of his career. The B day boy tripped over the centers foot and he was stumbling back to his feet. He gathered himself as the O line gave him all the protection in the world and he dove into the end zone for the game winning score with under 30 seconds to go. 

This is a statement win from the Jags who went toe to toe with a great Chiefs team and Lawrence led them to victory late in the game. The Chiefs suffer a minor set back and finish Week 5 below .500. It's been a while since they have seen that in KC. 

The Jags would kick a field goal to take the lead with 8 minutes left on the clock, but Mahomes and the Chiefs built up a slow, efficient drive that would wind the clock all the way down to under 2:00 to go. Hunt would run in his second TD of the quarter and put the Chiefs up by 4 with around 100 seconds to go. 

Kareem Hunt would tie the game up with his first of two TDs, and the craziness was just getting started. Hunt had 49 of the 158 yards on the ground. Mahomes led all Chiefs with 60 yards on 6 carries. 

The Jags gave it right back in their territory, but have a look at the play and tell me if you see any pass interference. That pass was intended for Washington who got tackled in the middle of his route and that opened a lane for McDuffie to make the pick. 

This was what really turned the game on it's head. The Jacksonville defense creates more turnovers than anyone in the league, and when they needed a play most it was Devin Lloyd who didn't just pick off his third pass in two games, but he took it to the house to give the Jags the lead right before the 4th quarter. 

After the Hunter catch, Lawrence ran it into the end zone to tie the game up midway through the 3rd quarter and it seemed like the tides had turned in Jacksonville. Lawrence led the Jags with 54 yards on 10 carries and had a couple of TD runs. 

The Jags forced the Chiefs into a three and out to start the third quarter and the Jags would build up a drive that tied the game thanks to this bomb to Travis Hunter. Hunter had 3 catches for 64 yards and made a couple of defensive plays througout the night, but no one would make a bigger play than Devin Lloyd. 

After the fumble and the TD to double the lead, the Jags needed to respond and Lawrence turned it on right before the halftime break. He found Parker Washington for the TD to cut the lead in half and that gave the Jags momentum going into the halftime break. 

The Chiefs went 97 yards after the forced fumble and Mahomes took the 9 yard scramble into the end zone. The Chiefs offense looked like the potent side that came out and beat up the Chiefs with Worthy back for a second straight week. The only difference on Friday was the Jags were able to keep pace with them after a slow start. 

The Jags were on their way to tying up the game but Lawrence had the QB sneak popped out of his hands and the Chiefs made a goal stand that they would turn into points on the other end. 

What a Monday NIght it was from Jacksonville as the Jaguars let the Kansas City Chiefs and the rest of the league know that they are ready to be taken seriously in the AFC. Trevor Lawrence celebrated his birthday with a game winning TD drive to move the Jags to 4-1 on the season. 

It wasn't the prettiest of starts for the Jags who came out and saw the Chiefs moving the ball at ease against their top rated defensive unit. Mahomes found Kelce for KC's first first quarter TD of the season. 

Mahomes goes with a Hail Mary from his 20 and that pass falls incomplete!!!

There was more than just a hint of PI on this interception by McDuffie. Washington got tackled in the middle of his route and that gave the DB a perfect looks at that pass that hit him right in the hands.

WE ARE BACK IN JACKSONVILLE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF ACTION!

The Jags responded after their turnover that led to point on the other end as Trevor Lawrence led a calm drive down the field with their backs against the ropes. He's 9/13 with 107 yards and this TD to Washington and he leads the Jags in rushing with 34 on 6 totes. 

Kareem Hunt had a big 33 yard run to start the drive after the fumble, and just four plays later Mahomes was running into the end zone untouched. He's got 164 yards and 1 TD though the air on 14/17 passing and 9 yards and a TD on the ground on his only rush of the night. 

The Jags looked like they were on their way to punching back but Lawrence fumbled the QB sneak over the top and KC's defense stood strong. 

The Chiefs sent the league a warning last week that their offense might be back, and after an opening drive punt, they marched right down field and scored their first first quarter TD of the season. Mahomes hit Kelce with the short pass and the pick play was flagged, but the flag was picked up since it came just a yard down field which is legal a yard or less down the field.

Talk about a heartbreaking turn of events. Lawrence tries the jump over the pack and Bolton was there to punch it out of his hands and force the fumble.

The pick play is usually illegal, but the contact from Hollywood Brown was within the one yard that you can set that pick and the TD stands after a flag flew. That's KC's first first quarter TD of the season.

Rashee’s comeback around the corner 

Patrick Mahomes got one of his main weapons back in his arsenal last week, and it won’t be too long until he gets another one of his top targets. After missing most of last season with a knee injury Rice was set to come back this season, but a high speed car crash led to a six game suspension and delayed his return. Now he is set to be back in action for the Chiefs Week 7 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. That means he won’t be available for the huge match up next week against the Lions, but Mahomes must be salivating to have a healthy receiving corp at his disposal in a matter or a few weeks. 

Hunter lost 

It might be time to make a decision on Travis Hunter. The former Heisman Trophy winner and the 2nd pick in the NFL Draft had plans to be one of the first two way players the NFL has seen in a long long time but his numbers on both sides of the ball have been underwhelming. He’s got just 118 yards receiving on 13 catches while on the defensive end he’s got 11 tackles and one pass deflection. We all know how the NFL is, if he has a big night tonight under the bright lights for Everbank Stadium than everyone tomorrow will say that Jacksonville are geniuses for picking the WR/DB. 

A very Worthy return 

I know we have mentioned it quite a few times this week, but the fact of the matter is, the return of Xavier Worthy has made this Chiefs team look like a completely revamped side. Now, they were playing the depleted Ravens defense last week, so you have to take that performance with a grain of salt, but it seemed to soothe Mahomes knowing his speedster was back on the field. He had 5 catches for 83 yards, but his impact goes above and beyond those numbers. It seemed to open things up for everyone on the offense last week. Let’s see if the same thing happens tonight in Jacksonville. 

Jags dangerous defense 

No one really knows where this Jags defense came from but it has been so much fun to watch through the first month of the season. Anthony Campanile came to the team in January and since his introduction the Jags have been a factory for forcing turnovers. In all four of their games they have forced at least three turnovers and last week they took the ball away from the Niners five times. The Chief aren’t exactly impervious to mistakes, and like so many other gams, this one could be determined by who wins the turnover battle. 

Star watch: Jags  

This is usually the quarterback portion of the preview so I guess we’ll stay true to our values, although Trevor Lawrence hasn’t exactly been playing like a star through the first month of the season. With as many possessions as the defense creates for him and the offense they should be scoring way more points, but Lawrence only has 5 TDs and 4 INTs this season. He is under the wing of QB genius Liam Coen, but that relationship is still in it’s early stages. Tonight he will face a Chiefs defense that will be looking to tee of on him on Monday Night Football. 

Star watch: Chiefs 

Patrick Mahomes is back. Let’s be honest, even when the Chiefs were struggling at the start of the season, he was still sensational. The good news is he may not have to do everything imaginable to lead his team to a win with Worthy on the field. Last week he looked calm, relaxed and protected in the pocket as he threw for a season high 270 yards. His numbers aren’t tops in the league, far from it as a matter of face, but with 7 TDs and 1 INT he was doing everything to keep his team in games. Now he can go out and win games with one of his top weapons back.  

Jags last game 

Once again, it was the Jags defense coming through in the clutch and leading the team to a win. Jacksonville packed their bags and headed went to take on a Niners team that got Brock Purdy back from a toe injury, but the Jags picked him off twice and forced another couple of fumbles as Travis Etienne lead the way on the offensive end. He had 124 yards on 19 carries and Trevor Lawrence threw a first half TD to send the Jags up 17-6 in San Fran. The Niners would come battling back to cut the lead to three points, but a Parker Washington 87 yard punt return put the Jags back up by 12. A 4th quarter TD for San Fran gave the Niners a chance late in the game, but Purdy was strip sacked as JAX created their 4th turnover of the day to seal the game and advance to 3-1.

For the first time since the opening series of Week 1, Patrick Mahomes got Xavier Worthy back and the Chiefs looked like the Chiefs of old. The offense looked fluid, it looked balanced and it looked like Mahomes didn’t have to be a magician on every single play with the speedy WR lined up outside. They were up 20-10 at halftime after a couple of Mahomes TDs, and then Lamar Jackson went down with a hamstring injury in the 2nd half. The Chiefs would turn it on and end up stretching the lead to 37-13 as Mahomes ended the game with 4 TDs and 270 yards to help KC get back to .500 on the year through four weeks.
