Jacoby Brissett and the Arizona Cardinals went into Dallas on a five game losing streak but came up with a huge win over the Cowboys on Monday night.
Update:

Show key events only

The Cardinals have been prone to giving up big fourth quarters and losing leads late in games, but the defense made sure that wasn't going to happen on Monday night. They held Dak to 24/39 passing and 250 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in one of his most uncomfortable night of the season. The Cardinals snap their five game slump as the Cowboys head into their BYE week with a bad taste in their mouths that will last the next couple of weeks.

The Cowboys tried to mount a comeback but it was much too little too late from the offense who was scoring more than 40 points per game at home. They were held to just 17 on Monday night, but it didn't look like maybe there was a chance to get back in the game when Dak found Ryan Flournoy on this TD pass early in the 4th quarter.

Brissett ended the night 21/31 for 261 yards and 2 TDs, and had this team moving the ball unlike we have seen from Arizona for most of the season. Granted it was against the terrible Dallas defense but he was still in command all night and it's been like that for the last three weeks. He found Trey McBride for the TD to go up three scores right at the start of the third quarter.

The Cardinals didn't panic after giving up the punt block and TD, instead they entrusted their veteran QB to lead them down the field again, and put points on the board before the halftime break. He's considered the back up but he might be winning the starting role with how he's played over the last few weeks.

With the offense at a stand still, it was the special teams that tried to spark life into the team. A punt block that got recovered in the end zone put the Cowboys on the board and closed the gap despite the Dallas offense struggling for the first 30 minutes.

The Cowboys looked to be building another drive into scoring position but Dak Prescott found Jake Ferguson and he had the ball ripped out of his hands, and captain of the Cards defense, Budda Baker was there for the recovery.

The Cardinals kicked a field goal on their first possession of the game and then Brissett and Marvin Harrison Jr. caught fire. He found his second year WR six times in the first half, one for this TD to put the Cards up 10-0 early in the second quarter.

The Arizona Cardinals snapped their five game losing streak by going into Dallas and dominating them with defense. The Cards defense forced three turnovers and kept the Dallas offense off the board for almost the entire night in the 27-17 win.

The Cowboys started off the game full throttle, easing down the field but once they got inside the 10 they sputtered as the defense locked down. Josh Sweat gave Dak Prescott problems all night, and came up with the sack to force the turnover on downs on the opening drive of the game.

Cardinals dominance over Dallas

The Cowboys may be America’s Team but don’t tell that to the Arizona Cardinals. They have won seven of the last eight games against Dallas . and it’s been exactly 20 years since the Cowboys have beaten the Cardinals at home. Tonight the Cowboys will be looking to reverse history in a place they have yet to lose this year.

Arizona's tight finishes

The Cardinals don’t need to be reminded that they are in the midst of a five game losing streak, but if you take a look at the scores over the first eight weeks of the season, it should tell you there is more to the story that meets the eye. All of their first seven game of the season have been decided by 7 points or less. Their only wins of the year came in a 7 point game and in a five point game. Since then they have lost each of their last five games, but none by more than you points. That includes a one point loss to San Francisco, a three point loss to Seattle, a one point collapse against Tennessee, and two four point losses to the Colts and the Packers. Aside from the Titans, those teams have a combined record of 24-8-1. It’s bad but a bounce here or a big play there and this team could have a very different looking record.

nfl

NFC Standings

Taking a look at the NFC Standings after the weekend we see that both of these teams are down their respective divisions but things are not out by any means. Arizona is in a bit more of a precarious case in an NFC West that has three six win teams through night weeks of the season. On the other hand, the Cowboys are 3-4-1 on the season but are a little closer to Philadelphia in the division, and have a better shot at the Wild Card. The tie they had against the Packers early in the season might come back to bite them once the playoff picture gets a little clearer so games like this are must wins for Jerry Jones’ team.

Cowboys star watch

There was talk of Dak Prescott being one of the favorites for MVP early in the season. While his stats were among the best of any QB around the league, the Cowboys weren’t winning and to be in that conversation you have to be leading you team to wins. He came into he week as one of the leading passers in the game with 2,069 yards which was second in the NFL and has 16 TDs with just 5 INTs so far this year.

Cardinals star watch

Ufff. This is a tough one. Who is the star for the Cardinals tonight? Their starting QB is out, and their top two RBs are also dealing with long term injuries, and Marvin Harrison Jr. has been going through a second year slump. So that leaves us Trey McBride who is one of the new breed of young tight ends who has been a sensation since coming into the league a few years ago. He leads the team with receptions with 47, in receiving yards with 421, and not surprisingly in TD catches with four. With a back up QB in the TE is always a clutch for the offense, so look for him to put up some big stats tonight against this Cowboys defense that is prone to giving up big yards.

Why isn’t Kyler Murray starting for the Cardinals against the Cowboys in MNF Week 9?

Murray’s status

The Arizona Cardinals have been without their starting QB for the last couple of games, and thought that maybe Kyler Murray would be back under center for their game against the Cowboys, but it appears that his foot injury has not healed properly, and that is going to leave Jacoby Brissett in under center for this primetime matchup. For being a back up with a depleted running game, Brissett has put up some big numbers in those two games. He’s got 599 yards and four TD with just one pick. He should have a chance to post another big statistical game against the Cowboys who are one of the worst defensive units in the game.

Cardinals last game

Before their BYE week, Jacoby Brissett and the Arizona Cardinals played the Green Bay Packers tight, and led for most of the way against a Packers team that are on the tip of everyone’s tongue when it comes to contenders in the NFC. It was Brissett’s second game as the starter, and he had the Cardinals either level or up on the Packers until the final couple minutes of the game. Brissett went for 279 yards and two TDs while the defense held GB to 3/10 on third down and the Packers committed 10 penalties, but they had a 10 play drive that was capped by a Josh Jabobs TD run to give the Pack their first lead with 1:51 left in the 4th and the Packers defense would hold on from there.

Cowboys last game

Dallas went into Denver in a battle of offense vs. defense, and as it so often happens, it was the defensive minded team that came out of the showdown from Mile High Stadium on top. The Denver D shut down one of the top passing QBs in the league, holding Dak Prescott to just 188 yards and picking him off twice and that allowed the Broncos to light up the Cowboys vulnerable defense. It was 14-3 in the first quarter and thing would only get worse as Bo Nix picked the Dallas D apart with 247 yards and 4 TD passes as the Broncos eased passed Dallas 44-24.

We are live from Dallas

Hello everyone and welcome to Texas where the Cardinals are on the road and desperately needing a win coming out of their BYE week. After winning their first two games of the season against the Panthers and the Saints, they have gone through a five game slide and that has them on the brink of playoff elimination already. The Dallas Cowboys have just one more win than the Cardinals but somehow their situation doesn’t seem to be as dire. They got smoked by the Broncos last week, and now after taking a beating they have to lick their wounds and get back in the win column before their BYE week.
