Brock Purdy injury update ahead of Tampa Bay game
The San Francisco quarterback has already missed three out of five games due to a persistent toe injury.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has already missed three games of the 2025 NFL season due to injury, but there is hope that he could be back soon.
Purdy has been struggling with a toe injury throughout the season, missing the Week 2 and Week 3 games, before returning to feature in a loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However he suffered a relapse and was out for the Thursday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Reports indicate that Purdy is continuing to recover but the 49ers have not yet given a concrete return date for the first-choice QB. However the team has stopped short of putting him on the Injured Reserve (IR) list.
“It hasn’t been a thought on [placing him on] IR,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Wednesday. “He’s progressing.”

Without Purdy, the 49ers have turned to Mac Jones to step into his place. So far it’s been a winning formula, with Jones picking up three wins from his three previous starts this season.
However Jones, too, is suffering with an injury problem and is now a doubt for the Tampa Bay game. ESPN reports that Jones has a left knee issue and an oblique injury, forcing the team to list him as a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice session.
He received medical treatment during the win against the Rams last week, meaning that the 49ers could be forced to turn to third-choice Adrian Martinez. Promoted from the practice squad earlier this week, Martinez has not taken a single regular season snap in the NFL and Shanahan has admitted that it would be a challenge to play him on Sunday.
“Obviously a guy who hasn’t been in your system very long and hasn’t gotten a lot of experience very long, you want to be as careful as you can,” Shanahan said of Martinez. “But when you’re in a 20-20 game or whatever it was at the time someone is taking over, you’re going to do what you got to do. You get in certain situations, and you’ve got to find out.”
