He was a 3-star QB with only 5 offers.
Only 1 Power 5 school wanted him.
So he walked on - twice.

• Became the starter, then lost his job after injury

Fortunately for the Bucs, Mayfield is there to stay for a little while longer.

Basically, it’s a two-year deal for $60 million with the contract including an out after two years. Mayfield has those two years to prove he deserves the $40 million in 2026. The incentives include $5 million every year, making the max value of the contract $115 million. Essentially, if he plays well, Mayfield has the opportunity to earn a lot of money, while the Bucs avoid a long-term commitment in case he doesn’t. So far, he’s been playing like a quarterback worth the money.
