Anthony Richardson’s future with the Indianapolis Colts is now up in the air after the team announced that Daniel Jones will be their starting quarterback for the 2025 season.

This will be the first time that Richardson has been forced to take a backup role in a season opener since he was drafted fourth overall in 2023.

Richardson, a University of Florida product once viewed as the franchise’s long-term solution, has not yet shown his best play in Indianapolis. On Tuesday Richardson’s agent, Deiric Jackson, told ESPN that his client feels let down after doing everything possible to win the job during training camp.

Trust is a big factor and that is, at best, questionable right now,” Jackson said. “Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp.”

Richardson saw preseason action against the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers, completing 8 of 14 passes for 94 yards while taking two sacks. He added nine yards on the ground on a single carry.

Limited playing time for Richardson

Richardson entered the league as a Week 1 starter in 2023, but his rookie campaign was cut short by a concussion and a right shoulder injury, limiting him to just four games. His sophomore year was marked by inconsistency, and while he eventually regained the starting role after Joe Flacco struggled, he still failed to lock it down.

Through two seasons, the Miami native has appeared in just 15 games, throwing for 2,391 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. On the ground, he has added 635 yards and 10 scores, showcasing the dual-threat ability that made him such a high draft pick.

Speaking publicly on Tuesday after the decision was announced, Richardson has insisted that he will not be discouraged.

“[Head coach Shane Steichen] made a decision,” he said. “That’s the decision we’ve got to live with, but no hard feelings, nothing personal. I’ve just got to keep growing. I just can’t let me not being a starter stop me from going and being the person, the player that I’m supposed to be.”
