Update:

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn made headlines Tuesday, not for game strategy or roster moves, but for the way he handled questions about wide receiver Garrett Wilson’s health.

“Ask Rich”: Aaron Glenn’s icy exchange with media

At his weekly news conference, Glenn declined to open with the usual round of injury updates, taking aim instead at an ESPN report that claimed Wilson would miss three to four weeks with a knee injury but would not require surgery.

“I’m going to pass on talking about injuries,” Glenn began. “Since Rich [Cimini, ESPN’s Jets reporter] - oh, he’s not here - has all the answers. So, you guys can get all the injuries from Rich.”

What followed was an awkward back-and-forth with reporters that turned the usually routine session into a tense exchange.

When one reporter asked if Wilson might be a candidate for injured reserve, Glenn doubled down: “Ask Rich,” he said. “I’m asking you,” the reporter replied. “Well, I’m telling you to ask Rich,” Glenn repeated.

When others pressed for clarification, Glenn wouldn’t budge. “You better call him,” he said, referring again to Cimini, who wasn’t present at the press conference. Moments later, Glenn walked off the podium.

Wilson, meanwhile, didn’t shed much light on his status either. When asked about the ESPN report that he could miss up to a month, the star receiver simply said, “Ask coach, bro.”

Wilson was listed as a non-participant in Tuesday’s walkthrough, along with cornerback Azareye’h Thomas (concussion) and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips (foot).

Receiver Adonai Mitchell, acquired from the Colts in last month’s trade that sent Sauce Gardner to Indianapolis, was also inactive for Sunday’s loss to the Browns. Glenn explained afterward that Mitchell needed “more time to get acclimated” with the offense before making his debut, though that may change soon.

With Wilson likely sidelined, Mitchell could see his first action as a Jet on Thursday night against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.

What’s next for the Jets offense

Wilson’s absence is a big hit for this offense, which is already struggling to find consistency. Without him, the receiving corps includes Josh Reynolds, rookie Arian Smith, Tyler Johnson, Allen Lazard, and Isaiah Williams.

Glenn mentioned that rookie tight end Mason Taylor could be counted on to help fill the void. “He’s someone who’s earned our trust,” Glenn said earlier this week.

Mitchell, for his part, said he’s prepared for whatever role comes next. “My job is to play when I’m called upon,” he said. “I can bring energy. That’s my biggest thing -energy. When I describe myself, I see myself as a winner.”
