Update:

The San Francisco 49ers will start with Mac Jones at quarterback this weekend, despite Brock Purdy’s gradual return to full fitness.

Purdy has missed much of the 2025 injury due to a toe injury sustained in Week 1, and later aggravated in Week 4. Purdy has returned to practice this week but was listed as a limited participant on all three days.

Speaking ahead of the big NFC West clash with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that it was still too soon for Purdy.

“It will be Mac again starting,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “We haven’t decided whether to make [Purdy] active or not, but he’s further along this week than last week.”

The San Francisco coach insists that Purdy remains the team’s No.1 choice at quarterback but Jones’ form has shown that he is a very capable deputy. With Jones the 49ers have gone 5-2 and the stand-in’s average of 261.7 passing yards per game is the fourth-best in the NFL.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, Jones told reporters that he is enjoying the opportunity to start for the 49ers. He has battled back from a series of injuries to get to this point and he is making the most of the chance.

“That’s a big reason why I play, to be honest, is to get the respect of people I trust and people that I would take an opinion from,” Jones said. “I try to show that every day. I have to continue to do that. It’s not a one-game thing, so I want to show it for the whole season. That’s my goal.”
