Pickett, a redshirt freshman cadet, was traveling with his family late Saturday when they came across a car that had crashed into a utility pole, bringing down live power lines. Videos posted by his family show Pickett and his father pulling the driver from the wreck just moments before the car erupted in flames.

“There was no discussion. My son just jumped right into action,” his father told ABC11, adding that Pickett’s military training immediately kicked in.

The U.S. Military Academy praised Pickett’s bravery, saying it was proud of his “heroic actions,” while Army athletic director Tom Theodorakis said the father-son duo “exemplify the values we hold dear.”

Pickett’s dramatic rescue came just one day after his college football debut, when he recorded a tackle in Army’s season opener.
