Update:

Golden State’s bid to make an early statement in the NBA Emirates Cup will have to start without Stephen Curry. The two-time MVP was ruled out of Friday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets because of an illness that has lingered since earlier in the week.

The Warriors confirmed that Curry did not travel with the team to Denver as his symptoms worsened overnight. Head coach Steve Kerr described the decision as “precautionary,” noting that the 36-year-old guard will remain in the Bay Area to rest and recover.

Who will cover for Steph Curry?

Curry’s absence leaves a huge hole in Golden State’s offense. Through the early stages of the season, he has averaged 26.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 45.4% from the field and nearly 39% from three. He leads the NBA with 35 made three-pointers.

With Curry sidelined, rookie Will Richard will once again step into the starting lineup after an eye-catching performance against the Sacramento Kings, where he hit 30 points along with seven rebounds and three assists.

Who else is injured for Warriors?

Draymond Green (rib contusion) and Jimmy Butler (lower back) were both listed as questionable heading into the game, adding to the Warriors’ uncertainty. The team hopes to have Curry back by their next fixtureagainst the Pacers on Sunday – depending on how quickly his symptoms clear.
