The Lakers looked like they had the game won. They were up 4 with a few seconds left and Kelley Olynyk hit a two point bucket with 1.2 on the clock. Marcus Smart inbounded it quickly to Rui Hachimura all the way on the other side of the court but stepped on the baseline while inbounding and SA got the ball. Julian Champagnie was fouled on the inbound and went to the line with a chance to tie the game, but missed the first FT and his second miss was almost tapped in. The Lakers hung on for their fifth straight victory.

Luka had a great night passing the ball, but with a chance to take the lead he put the ball in his hands, and made the big money shot to put the Lakers ahead with just over 2:00 to go in the 4th.

The tides started to turn when Wemby picked up his 5th foul early in the 4th quarter, and suddenly there was space down low for Hayes and company to operate.

The Spurs saw Stephon Castle step up with Wemby on and off the bench. He carried them during a big run to end the 3rd quarter, and at one point the Spurs led by 12 in the fourth.

With no LeBron or Reaves, Luka had to spread it around because he wasn't going to be able to do it all on his own. He ended up with 13 assists, but this one to Hachimua was the highlight of the night.

Wemby had a slow start to the night, and was battling foul trouble in the second half. Even when he's struggling, he's still spectacular. He ended the night with 19 and 8 but fouled out with just over a minute to go.

The Los Angeles Lakers took it to the final buzzer, but ended up holding off the San Antonio Spurs from the Crytpo.com Arena. Luka Doncic had a monster game, going for 35, 9, 13, 5 steals and 2 blocks.

He got going early but it was the Spurs who were in control for most of the first half.

WE ARE UNDER WAY FROM LA!!!

Reaves breakout week

The Lakers early seasons injury problems have given birth to a new star in LA. We already knew that Austin Reaves was a great player but last week without Luka or LeBron on the court, he went off. He set a career high in points dropping 51 against the Kings, followed by a 41 points performance and then tied a career high with 16 assists in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves which he ended with a buzzer beating game winner. He was listed as questionable before the game with a groin injury, but he will be itching to play against a top team in the West tonight.

Waiting on the King

He’s the games all time leading scorer a four time champion and one of the NBA’s greatest players ever. He is also over 40 years old, and his body needs some maintenance from time to time. LeBron James has yet to make his debut this season as he continues to deal with sciatica problems that will keep him out of tonight’s game. He has no timeline for his return at the moment, but the Lakers won’t rush him back to the court, especially if LA continue to win games. Sir Charles Barkley seems to be a bit skeptical of the diagnosis, but doesn’t doubt the 40 year olds back pain.

NFL

Standings in the West

I know it’s early, but these big games against teams that figure to be fighting for playoff position later in the season may seem insignificant but they could have a huge influence on where these teams fall in the standings later in the season. Taking a look at the West, the Thunder remain undefeated with a perfect 8-0 start to the season while the Spurs and Lakers sit right behind them. San Antonio is 5-1 and the Lakers are 6-2 sitting in 2nd and 3rd respectively. It’s going to be a season long battle in the West, but both these teams will be expecting to be at the top of the standings until spring.

Spurs star watch

After missing a big chunk of the last part of the season with a deep vein thrombosis blood clot in his right shoulder, Wemby spent the offseason recovering, getting in shape and even training with Shaolin monks. Whatever his method was worked wonders for him. He has been sensational this season averaging 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.8 blocks. He had his first off night of the season against the Suns in the last game, so you can bet he’ll be back to his best tonight from LA.

Lakers star watch

Luka Doncic is listed day to day with a leg injury, but you would think after getting some rest and sitting for the Portland game Luka will be back for the big match against the Spurs tonight. He’s played in four of the eight games the Lakers have played, but he has been spectacular when on the floor. The Slovenian got his first triple double against the Heat over the weekend and is averaging 41.3 points a game to go with his 11.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists, and has been carrying the Lakers when healthy. Tonight against the Spurs he’s going get plenty of different defensive looks, and might even have Wemby shadowing him. It should be quite the matchup between two of the league’s best players.

Spurs last game

The Spurs were handed their first loss of the season in their last game. After starting the season on a five game roll, they went to Phoenix and had an off night as Victor Wembanyama went just 4/14 from the floor and was held to less than 10 points for the first time this season. Stephon Castle had 26, 7 and 5 assists, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Phoenix who built up a 24 point lead heading into the final quarter and cruised to the win behind Devin Bookers 28 points.

Lakers last game

With no LeBron, or Luka or Austin, it was up to the Lakers big man Deandre Ayton to carry the load against his former teams, the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers got up early, but it was a tight game thought and the Lakers took control and didn’t let go of the lead midway through the 3rd quarter. Ayton had 29 and 10 while Rui Hachimura posted another 28 points as the Lakers continued their great start to the season despite their growing list of injuries.
