Update:

Sara Crow and her family moved into their new home in 2019 but for reasons only known to her, the bathtub was a no-go zone for the first few years.

Recently, Sara finally plucked up the courage to test the bathtub jets after putting it off for six years. After sending her youngest child off to school, she decided to try the jets out and recorded the moment for posterity on her phone...

“My youngest is off to kindergarten and I have some extra time on my hands and I decided that was the day I was going to see what came out of them,” Crow told Newsweek. “I had watched other people cleaning their jetted tubs on TikTok and wanted to do mine.”

“We moved into this house in June of 2019,” Sara added. “I never wanted to use or clean the jets because I already knew the previous owners never used the bathtub in all the years they lived there. I figured it would be full of mold and a big job to clean it out.”

Bathtub jets release black gunge

Tentatively turning the water on, Sara gasped in horror as the bathtub slowly filled with filthy water with blobs of slimy black gunk gushing out from the taps. “My first reaction was oh my gosh this is worse than I thought. I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.

Oh. My. Gawd. Holy moldy This is a long time coming. I’ve been dreading and so scared to start the process to clean/use these. I ended up stopp after running it thru twice because I could smell the motor heating up!🥴 is that normal? lol #jettedtub #jettedtubclean #cleantok #mold

Sara was proved right - the pipes were completely filthy and she had to get down to some deep cleaning. She threw in a dishwasher pod, drained the tub then ran the jets again to flush out all the black mold, and used another dishwasher pod to give the jets a thorough deep-clean.

I’ve run the jets twice and there is still debris coming out of them but it definitely doesn’t look like it did in this video,” Crow said.

The video has racked up 2.9 million views and almost 17,000 comments.

What was the black slime that clogged up the pipes?

It’s quite common for black sludge to build up in pipes in the bathroom and there are a few reasons behind it. Mold and mildew grows in damp, warm and humid conditions and will stick to the walls of pipes. So once the water is turned on, it will be flushed out into your bathtub.

Soap scum and other waste material (clumps of hair, toothpaste...) gets lodged in pipes and bacteria will start to develop if the pipes go a long time without being used.

So regularly cleaning your plumbing system is recommended. Tip a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda down the plughole, let it sit for 10-15 minutes then pour white vinegar down until the mixture starts to fizz. Leave for half an hour then rinse with boiling hot water to leave your pipes gleaming and gunk-free
