Update:

As the search and rescue operation continues in Central Texas following catastrophic flash floods, the community is only beginning to take stock of the damage. Authorities announced on Sunday morning that 59 people have been confirmed dead, and that number may rise as several individuals remain unaccounted for—including 11 Camp Mystic campers and a counselor.

Rescue teams have brought more than 800 people to safety, a testament to their tireless efforts in the face of an unprecedented disaster. The Guadalupe River is reported to have risen approximately 26 feet in under an hour on Friday evening. Many residents awoke to water already rising around their properties, while others were startled awake by floodwaters creeping into their homes.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has informed those affected that they can begin reporting property damage through the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT). He has signed a disaster declaration covering the impacted counties and has requested federal disaster assistance, prompting the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to initiate its response.

The danger is not over: Stay Vigilant

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch for parts of central Texas. For the most up-to-date list, visit the NWS’s website. A Flood Watch is “issued when conditions are favorable for flooding,” but no flooding has yet been reported. Those under a Flood Watch should ensure that they are registered to receive emergency alerts, and you can find out how to sign up to receive those warnings through the county and city you live in.

What relief options are available to flood victims?

Options will depend on several factors, including whether a person has flood or home insurance that will cover the damage. If you do not have insurance, the disaster declaration issued by Gov. Abbott and the federal government will make additional resources available.

For those with insurance

For those with flood insurance—whether through their home insurance provider or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)—it’s important to file a claim as soon as possible. In most cases, claims must be filed within 60 days of the incident. The Texas Department of Insurance advises residents who are unable to reach their insurance company to call 1-800-252-3439 for assistance.

If you do not have insurance, you may still qualify for federal disaster assistance. All affected residents are strongly encouraged to document the damage with photos and videos. The state advises against discarding any damaged items until you have spoken with your insurance adjuster. However, FEMA resources are typically only available in areas that have been declared disaster zones by the president. On Sunday, July 6, President Trump signed a disaster declaration for Kerr County—just one of several counties impacted by the storm. The limited scope of this declaration may make it more difficult for residents in other affected counties to access federal assistance.
