Update:

Voters across the country head to the polls Tuesday, November 4, in a series of high-profile and crucial elections. While the last presidential election was just 12 months ago, this round of votes will have significant implications for New York City and three states - California, New Jersey and Viriginia - and could influence the national political landscape.

This is when the outcome of Tuesday’s elections should start to become clear.

New York City: New mayor to be elected

New York City will choose its next mayor on Tuesday. Democrat Zohran Mamdani is the favorite to become the Big Apple’s first Muslim mayor, despite former President Donald Trump endorsing independent candidate Andrew Cuomo. Republican Curtis Sliwa is also in the race.

Polls in New York City close at 9 p.m. ET. Historically, the city is quick to report results, so the winner could be known within a couple of hours, with indications of the outcome appearing even earlier.

California: Proposition 50 vote

California voters will decide on Proposition 50 in a special election called by the state legislature. If approved, a new congressional district map would take effect for the next three election cycles and could help Democrats gain up to five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, potentially altering the balance of power in Washington.

Polls close at 8 p.m. PT (11 p.m. ET). Results will be updated in real time on the California Secretary of State’s election results website and continue to be counted during the canvassing period. Final certification is scheduled for December 12, but the outcome is expected long before that.

New Jersey: Close governor’s race expected

New Jersey is poised for a tight race for governor. Democrat Mikie Sherrill faces Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman endorsed by Trump. While New Jersey leans Democratic, Republicans have held the governor’s office in the past.

Polls close at 8 p.m. ET. Preliminary results will be available shortly after, but mail-in ballots can be counted for six days following the election. County officials will meet on November 19 to canvas results, sending them to the state on November 20. The state must certify results by December 4.

Virginia: First female governor to be elected

Virginia voters will make history by electing the state’s first female governor. Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a U.S. congresswoman, faces Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, the current lieutenant governor.

Along with the governor, Virginia will elect a new lieutenant governor, attorney general, and all 100 seats in the House of Delegates. Polls close at 7 p.m. ET, and results could be known within minutes, based on last year’s presidential vote pattern.
