What is the problem between Netflix and Elon Musk, and the real reason why he is asking people to unsubscribe?
Elon Musk urges followers to cancel Netflix, accusing the streamer of promoting “woke” content and linking the dispute to personal loss.

Elon Musk has declared war on Netflix, urging his millions of followers to cancel their subscriptions to the streaming platform. At first glance, it looks like another billionaire-versus-Hollywood spat. But beneath the surface lies a complex mix of culture-war politics, personal history, and Musk’s ongoing crusade against what he calls the “woke mind virus.”
The controversy began when Musk accused Netflix of producing “sexualized content for children” and of promoting what he described as a “transgender agenda.” His criticism centered on Dead End: Paranormal Park, an animated series that features a transgender protagonist, and more broadly on what he sees as an overrepresentation of LGBTQ+ themes in family programming. The series was canceled in January 2023, after two seasons, though it’s still available on the platform.
“Cancel Netflix,” Musk posted on X, the social platform he owns, a call that quickly spread among his followers. Memes and videos accusing Netflix of “pushing ideology through entertainment” racked up millions of views, sparking a brief but intense online backlash against the streaming giant.

Netflix has not responded directly to Musk’s campaign, but the market reaction was immediate. The company’s shares dipped in early trading after his remarks, briefly wiping out billions in market value.
Elon Musk’s personal backstory
While Musk’s public argument is about media and morality, many observers point to a more personal undercurrent. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has a transgender daughter, Vivian Wilson, with whom he is estranged. He has frequently blamed what he calls the “woke mind virus” for “killing” his relationship with her.
In a 2024 interview with psychologist Jordan Peterson, Musk claimed he was “tricked” into approving gender-affirming care for Vivian when she was 16. He has since positioned himself as a vocal critic of trans rights policies and gender-affirming medicine, making his personal loss a cornerstone of his political rhetoric.
Critics argue that his campaign against Netflix is simply an extension of those views — a way of framing the platform as part of the same cultural movement he blames for dividing his family. Supporters, meanwhile, praise him for “standing up for parents” and for questioning what’s appropriate in children’s entertainment.
More than one fight
The Netflix episode also fits a familiar Musk pattern: using social media megaphones to drive public outrage and reshape narratives around culture, politics, and technology. As the owner of X, he can amplify such campaigns instantly, turning personal grievances into global talking points.
For Netflix, the controversy may prove fleeting. The streamer has faced similar storms before — from both left and right of the political spectrum — and tends to weather them with little long-term damage. For Musk, however, the clash has once again put his cultural politics and family life on display, blurring the line between personal pain and public crusade.
In the end, Musk’s call to “cancel Netflix” may have less to do with TV programming than with his own sense of loss — and his determination to make that loss a political cause.
