Some grocery stores will be open on Thanksgiving, with limited opening hours, but many of the big chains will be closed for the day.
Thanksgiving, the penultimate federal holiday of 2025 is just weeks away and Americans are gearing up for the big day. It’s a time for visiting friends and family, sitting down to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner together, or just relaxing and disconnecting.
Many will have their day prepared in advance but what about those who haven’t had the chance to and need to make a last-minute run to the grocery store to grab an ingredient?
Which stores will be closed on Thanksgiving?
While many businesses will be closed for the day, some stores have changed their work policy for Thanksgiving in recent years and will be open - if only for a few hours.
Costco, Target, Sam’s Club and BJ’s will all be closed on Thanksgiving. Most Kroger stores will be open but will close early, between 3 and 4 p.m. Meijer, Food Lion and Whole Foods, will also be opening up for business - again with limited operating hours.
Grocery stores that will be open on Thanksgiving
- Meijer (6 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
- Food Lion (most stores will close at 3 p.m. - stores in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Blacksburg, and Charlottesville will close at 4 p.m.)
- Whole Foods (7 a.m. to 1 p.m. - apart from stores in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island which will be closed)
- Harris Teeter (open until 2 p.m. however, pharmacies will be closed)
- Wegmans (open until 4 p.m.)
- Sprouts Farmers Market (7 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
- Giant Eagle (open until 3 p.m. but pharmacies will be closed)

Opening times may vary by location so it’s best to check first before you head out the door.
