Update:

Officially given U.S. state recognition in 1959 (becoming the 50th state), Hawaii has also been voted as the ‘happiest state to live in for 2025′ by WalletHub readers.

WalletHub looked at 30 metrics across all 50 states to determine which state has the happiest residents. Within the 30 metrics, researchers then identified three key dimensions:

  1. Emotional and physical well-being
  2. Work environment
  3. Community and environment

Traditionally Hawaii is consistently ranked as an attractive place to live in due to a combination of cultural, environmental, and statistical factors that contribute to high levels of overall well-being.

Hawaii frequently ranks highest in metrics related to health and emotional state and Hawaiians have the longest life expectancy in the nation, which is often attributed to the climate and lifestyle.

The state consistently reports one of the lowest adult depression rates and the temperate, year-round weather and natural beauty encourage high rates of participation in outdoor activities like surfing, hiking, and swimming, contributing to excellent physical health.

The Aloha Spirit and unique culture of the islands provides a strong foundation for social happiness and mental health and at the core of Hawaiian culture is the concept of Aloha (kindness, hospitality, mutual respect) and Ohana (family/community). This strong social fabric and emphasis on community ties create a powerful support system that fosters emotional satisfaction.

While Hawaii does have a high cost of living, it scores well in several areas that reduce financial and social stress. The state typically maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, which lessens financial anxiety for many residents.

Hawaii generally has a lower violent crime rate compared to the national average, contributing to a strong sense of community and safety.

These factors—strong social bonds, excellent health, and a positive environment—allow residents to report the highest levels of life satisfaction in the nation, solidifying Hawaii’s reputation as the happiest state.
