Want to avoid having your car stolen? Experts will point you in the direction of a new electric vehicle as these vehicles feature the latest technology including whole-vehicle anti-theft systems.

This is where Honda Accord owners should look away as the car holds the historical status as one of the most stolen cars in the USA. This can be attributed to a combination of factors, though it’s important to note that recent reports often show other models (particularly certain Hyundai and Kia models) surpassing it due to specific security vulnerabilities.

Historically, the main reasons for the high theft rate of the Honda Accord are the fact that the Accord is one of the best-selling and most common cars on American roads, meaning there is simply more opportunity for thieves to find and steal one.

Its popularity means there is a strong, lucrative market for used parts. Thieves can often get more money by stealing a car and stripping it for parts (like engines, transmissions, body panels, and even airbags) to sell on the black market than by selling the whole stolen car. Many Honda parts are interchangeable across different models and years, increasing their value.

A significant number of the stolen Accords are older models, particularly those from the mid to late 1990s and early 2000s, which lack modern, sophisticated anti-theft technology like electronic engine immobilizers. These older vehicles are easier for a thief to “hotwire” or steal using simple tools and techniques.

While the Honda Accord remains a frequently stolen vehicle, in the most recent years (like 2023 and 2024), Hyundai and Kia models have often taken the top spots. This is due to widely publicized security vulnerabilities in certain models from the 2010s and early 2020s that lack engine immobilizers, making them extremely easy to steal with basic tools, a method often spread through social media challenges.

However, the Honda Accord and Honda Civic consistently remain among the top 10 most stolen vehicles due to the factors mentioned above, especially the continuing vulnerability and high parts demand for older models.
